Ferns & Hostas

Ferns

Great for shady areas Ferns can be more than just the bracken weed you get. The majority prefer damp situations, but you can get some varieties that grow in drier sites.

We grow a selection of varieties alongside our perennials. When their new fronds start to unfurl in spring is when we have the biggest selection and we aim to have a good stock throughout the summer too. As the autumn and winter comes there will be some of the evergreen varieties available whilst the others are taken for propagation ready for the next year.

Hostas

Hostas are the star of any shady border with their architectural big leaves and swaying stems of mostly lilac flowers, sometimes scented too.

The variety of colour combinations within the leaves make them interesting even when they don’t have any flowers on them.

They can come in a variety of sizes from the large glaucous leaves of varieties such as Hosta sieboldiana to the miniature alpine varieties like Hosta ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ - there’s a Hosta for everyone!

Just watch out for those pesky slugs who just love to munch a Hosta for breakfast, lunch and tea!
