Climbers

You should be seeing the benefits of winter pruning climbers such as wisteria and summer/autumn flowering clematis as discussed in February’s Blog. Their fat buds and new growth signalling warmer, sunnier times ahead (we hope)!

Now is the perfect time to introduce any new climbers to your space. Don’t forget there’s climbers to suit all aspects and spaces.

If you are planting new climbers against a solid structure like a wall or fence, allow a good space (40-45cm) in between so that the plant isn’t sheltered from rainwater and has plenty of room for root development.

If your climbers need support (be it wires, trellis or metal structures such as obelisks), it’s always best to get these in place as early as possible. You’d be amazed how quickly some climbers get going and before you know it, weeks have passed, you’ve been so busy and your beloved new climber is wrapping itself around something quite unintended (or indeed itself).

Tie-in new growth regularly with garden twine or similar (not wire or anything too abrasive that might cause damage to soft new growth if it rubs).

The majority of our climbers are British grown and with recent deliveries, we’ve a wide selection to choose from, located in their new home by the updated shrub beds.
