Vegetables

A variety of onion sets, shallots, garlic and seed potatoes are available from early January. All of our potato varieties are from Scottish seed.

We sow all of our own vegetable seedlings here at the nursery. Starting in February with Chillies, Peppers and Tomatoes and continuing right through to the end of May with brassicas, lettuce and overwintering vegetables.

Aim for the end of March / beginning of April to start planting out in your vegetable patches. Onions, potatoes and garlic are some of the first things to go in and then as the soil warms up you can start direct sowing Parsnips, Carrots and Radishes and planting out some seedlings too. Don’t get in a rush, even if it’s a warm spring, as some vegetables don’t like cold nights – Courgettes, Beans and Squashes for example are best planted out from the middle of May.

Greenhouse plants such as Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumber etc will be ready from the beginning of April at the earliest - but only for those with a greenhouse. If you want to grow these outside you’ll have to wait until the middle of May once the risk of frost is over – you don’t want your tomatoes going blue with the cold!
