Home Grown Lavenders
We’re well known for our Lavender plants which we grow right here. With plenty of both English and French Lavender varieties to choose from (and a couple of other types too).
English Lavenders (angustifolia) have a strong fragrance and are very hardy. They usually flower during June and July (but our seasons are rather ‘unseasonal’ lately!) and plants tend to be longer lived (10-15yrs). Lavandula angustifolia also makes a great hedge. We have 10 varieties to choose from depending on height and spread (including a white variety and the aptly named ‘Ashdown Forest’).
French Lavenders (stoechas) have a more subtle fragrance and the flowers bear ‘wings’ or ‘flags’. Lavandula stoechas may need protection during very cold winters. Plants have a longer flowering season during late spring and summer but are slightly shorter lived. Again, we have varieties to suit your space, including ‘Tiara’ which has purple flowers topped with white ‘wings’.
Climbers
Now is the perfect time to plant climbers. The soil has warmed and plants are in growth mode, so get them planted and they can romp away in their permanent spot.
There’s a climber for every aspect, full sun or more shady situations. They’re perfect if you’re short on ground space but would like to add vertical colour and interest to a boring wall or fence.
Many climbers are self clinging using tendrils, stems or sticky pads. Others will need to be trained or tied in periodically.
Climbing plants are also great for providing shelter and food for wildlife too.
