Lawn Love

Whilst we escaped a hosepipe ban this summer and our lawns are more likely to have suffered from waterlogging rather than drought, chances are your lawn is probably looking a little lacklustre.

Now is a great time to tackle any lawn issues before the ground gets too hard and cold.

Weeds, leaves, moss and thatch can be removed with a good raking (and are great additions to your compost heap/bin).

Now improve the drainage and aerate the ground to allow good air flow and help prevent future waterlogging. This is especially relevant in our area which is predominantly clay. Make roughly 5cm deep holes every 10-15cm or so with a garden fork.

Feed your lawn in autumn to help protect it from harsh winter weather & give it a good start next spring. Ensure that you use an autumn lawn feed as this will target root development rather than encourage lots of lush top growth.

Level any uneven areas with topsoil and reseed with a grass mix to suit your site.

Lawn seed should be watered regularly but hopefully Mother Nature can assist with that!

Spring Flowering Bulbs

It’s not too late to plant spring bulbs, and with new varieties every year, the combinations are endless.

Create colourful displays to take you from late January through to summer.

It is always advised not to plant tulips until late October/November onwards, as this reduces the risk of them getting tulip fire (a fungal disease which leads to brown spots and distorted leaves, so that plants appear to be scorched by fire).

If you fancy planting a ‘bulb lasagne’ this year. our trusted bulb supplier, Taylors Bulbs (holder of no less than 30 RHS Chelsea Gold Medals), has easy-to-follow info & recommended varieties.

We have buy-in-bulk nets for naturalising, stylish bulb collections and a great range of single variety packs & loose bulbs.
