A word about compost…
As has been widely publicised in recent years, the use of peat products come with a high cost to the environment.
Peat bogs are becoming an increasingly rare habitat both in the UK and across Europe. They take thousands of years to form and a great number of flora and fauna depend on them. Destroying the peat bogs also contributes towards climate change.
We are transitioning to peat free in as many lines as possible here at the nursery over this year, ahead of the official 2024 deadline.
Our knowledgeable team are always here to answer any questions you may have about adapting to peat free growing.
Coupled with this, we would like to discourage customers from over purchasing and potentially wasting valuable resources. This is why we have decided to reduce our compost multibuy offers and sell our products at a competitive single bag price (which actually work out slightly cheaper than perceived multibuy deals).
Birdcare
Spare a thought for our feathered friends during these colder months.
Unlike many of our garden visitors that fatten up during the warmer months and survive on their fat stores over winter, birds live in the moment and need a regular supply of food to maintain their body weight.
Anything you can do to supplement their diet, particularly when the ground is hard or water sources are frozen, will be a huge help.
We stock a wide variety of specialist bird food mixes, seeds, nuts and high energy treats.
The busiest time for nesting birds is usually from March, so now is the perfect time to give potential nesting spots a bit of TLC.
It’s an excuse not to be too tidy around the garden or rush out now that the ground has softened a bit. Leave any natural fibres, prunings or moss for the nest builders and resist the urge to trim hedges or bushes.
National Nest Box Week runs from 14th February to the 21st February., so why not replace any broken boxes or add an additional one to your garden.
Watching garden birds nesting in your space can bring so much joy to all ages.
